VIENTIANE This delightfully friendly capital, studded with crumbling French mansions, bougainvillea¬-blooming streets and steaming noodle stalls, is somewhere between a big town and a diminutive city; the kind of place you might find a Graham Greene protagonist. Its conveniently compact travellers’ enclave is based around Nam Phu, the Mekong riverside and Setthariat and Samsenthai streets. Full of things to see, from Buddha Park to the Morning market and an impossibly rich selection of international cuisine – most pointedly French – you’ll find yourself slowly won over by the easy charms of this evolving backwater. The city may reveal its beauty less readily but spend a few days visiting its unusual sights, sampling its excellent food and enjoying a Beer Lao at sunset by the river, and you’ll soon feel at home here.

DAY 2: (B-0-0) Breakfast serve at the hotel. Morning pick up at hotel, visit Wat Prakeo, Wat Sisaket, and That Luang Monument. Afternoon is free at leisure. DAY 3: (B-L-0) Breakfast serve at the hotel. We head out of the city and make our way to Nam Ngum, a huge reservoir created by damming the Nam Ngum River. We stop over at Ban Keun, which is famous for its salt extraction plant and a village that distills the local Lao whiskey. On arrival at Nam Ngum Lake, we embark on a motor boat visiting fishing villages in the various islets for one and a half hours. We take a short walk to explore the lifestyle of the local fishermen. Lunch at a local restaurant overview the Lake. On return, [if time permits], perhaps you might want to experience gambling at the legal Lao casino located in the valley where you can also enjoy a beautiful view of the lake. We return to Vientiane by late evening. DAY 4: (B-0-0) Breakfast serve at the hotel, this is your final relaxation day, time to take photos and souvenirs while waiting for the pick up transfers.
